I'm Katie Kerner, Fitness Coach, And This Is How I Workout

Start off by telling us about yourself and your journey!
My name is Katie Kerner (previously Katie Miller before I got married). I am the owner of Katie Miller Fitness LLC & I get to help women all over the world reach their fitness goals! It is truly a blessing and creating & operating my company is something that I am very proud of.

How did you get into fitness?
I have been athletic my entire life and was always involved in multiple sports. When I got to college I decided to major in Exercise Science and to add to my credibility I decided to enter my first bodybuilding competition in 2011. I graduated early in 2012 & completed my internship with Medical Exercise Associates in Florida. After that, I became a certified personal trainer and started my online business, Katie Miller Fitness LLC. I competed from 2011 to 2018 and eventually earned my IFBB Professional Card. In 2018 I realized I was more passionate about helping other women reach their fitness goals so I decided to stop competing to put all my focus toward my online business.

What's your fitness specialty?
Body & mindset transformation for women to not only build a solid foundation toward their fitness goals but learn it in a sustainable way.

What's your preferred style of encouragement?
I like to ensure my clients know that I was once a beginner and was in the same exact place as they are. Although I grew up in athletics, I was not raised eating super healthy. I make sure my clients know that most women are more alike than different. We all want to have great health and just overall feel our best. Knowing others are just like you sometimes helps give you that extra push.

What would you recommend to someone that is new to the city, or working out, in terms of meeting and connecting with others?
I love the quote “A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.” I like to think of this quote in all areas of my life. Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and push yourself to compliment the girl next to you at soul cycle, to ask an acquaintance to coffee, message that girl that lives in the same city. As women, we all crave connection!! You will connect with the people you are meant to connect with but you need to actively network in order to form these friendships! Something I am currently working on myself as I am very introverted.

How do you track fitness goals?
I am at a point in my journey where my habits have taken the wheel and are the main driving force toward maintaining my fitness goals. However, every Sunday I do write out a few fitness, business and social media marketing non-negotiables for the week. These are the bare minimum that I must complete and anything extra is allowed but not required. I get overwhelmed easily and this has been working like a charm for me lately!

How are your favorite workouts structured? By sets and reps? Or Sets and Duration?
I am in a maintenance phase right now so I have been all about efficiency with my workouts. I have been doing three 30 min circuits a week that involve plyometrics, athletic movements, and weights. I also practice my pull-ups, push-ups, pistol squats on my off days and I walk outside everyday to clear my mind.

Who are your fitness icons/mentors/heroes/inspiration?
Right now I am more inspired by anybody who is living their life for them, not for external validation. I am inspired by anybody who gives off positive energy and makes me feel empowered. It is not limited to the fitness industry or somebody’s personal achievements. I am inspired by people who lift others ups by simply being their authentic self.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food would have to be pizza and dark chocolate!

What is your word for 2019?
Intentional.

What’s your go-to song or artist at the gym?
I listen to personal development podcasts! I honestly haven’t listened to music during a workout in months. Something about listening to a podcast (which I do enjoy) makes me feel productive and allows me to relax during my workout and fully get into my groove! Multi-tasking ;)

What are three interesting facts about you?
1. I am an animal lover!
2. I have lived in 7 different states throughout my lifetime.
3. My first job was Giordano’s pizza in Chicago and I never once touched it. I hated pizza until a few years ago and now it is my favorite food. I honestly have no clue how that happened.

What is your greatest achievement and how has it shaped you?
In order to earn your IFBB Pro Card you have to win an extremely competitive national show. For years, I placed runner-up and I saw my friends begin their journey to the pro league after me and enter the pro league before me. In order to eventually earn my IFBB Pro Card (in 2017), I had to continue to evolve as a women & competitor. I am most proud of this journey because it taught me grit. This journey also taught me that I CAN achieve anything I want, as long as I keep showing up and evolving as a human. The JOURNEY to my pro card & the empowering community that came along for the ride with me is by far one of my greatest achievements.

If you could master one skill you do not have, what would it be?
Being connected to my intuition 2/47 without having to actively work at it.
