I'm Phaedra Wright, Personal Trainer, And This Is How I Workout

Start off by telling us about yourself and your journey!
My name is Phaedra Wright (aka PhaedraFitness) and I am a young entrepreneur and personal trainer. I have been working in the fitness industry for the last 10 years and what a journey it has been. I recently opened a stunning boutique fitness & wellness centre in Vancouver BC called VIP Fitness & Lifestyle. We specialize in promoting all-around healthy lifestyle habits through fitness, RMT, life & nutrition coaching & more!

How did you get into fitness?
I grew up dancing up to 16 hours a week, it was a huuuuge passion of mine. When I was 18 I was scouted to start teaching dance which quickly led me into getting certified as a personal trainer as well! After teaching dance I fell in love with helping people feel more confident and happier about themselves.

What's your fitness specialty?
I am known around the lower mainland as the booty specialist! I have been specializing in and sought after for glute focused training for the last 5+ years! Coming from a background of belly dance, it’s all about glute contractions which translated very well when I started lifting weights!

What's your preferred style of encouragement?
I am always super empathetic to my clientele. At the same time, I tell them what they need to hear when they need to hear it! A combination of tough love along with extreme relatability and respect has been my most successful encouragement tactics! People will respect you more if you tell them what they NEED to hear, rather than just what they WANT to hear!

What would you recommend to someone that is new to the city, or working out, in terms of meeting and connecting with others?
Come to VIP Fitness & Lifestyle! We are a community and make human connection a top priority! We regularly host workshops and events along with always creating a positive and inviting environment!

Other than that, I suggest joining a sports team! A great way to get active and meet people!

How do you track fitness goals?
We have an online training app that we use with all our clients and I actually use myself!! It’s great for staying accountable with your workout consistency and nutrition goals! We also use MyFitnessPal because in my opinion, no one will ever top them as far as nutritional tracking goes!

What metrics do you track for your goals?
I personally like to focus on volume training most of the time. I find when it comes to building booty specifically I prefer to prioritize the maximal glute contraction rather than just lifting as heavy as possible and potentially recruiting other muscle groups.

How are your favorite workouts structured? By sets and reps? Or Sets and Duration?
Haha this is a hard one to answer! I love to do supersets as I’m all about efficiency in the gym. I sometimes count reps but I more like to focus on the contraction. Sometimes I’m done at 8 or 10 sometimes I can bang out 25 reps! And I love the switch it up between different training styles!

Who are your fitness icons/mentors/heroes/inspiration?
I have always looked up to Lyzabeth Lopez because she is not only a fitness/health inspiration but also a bad-ass businesswoman. I follow a ton of amazing and inspiring women on Instagram who motivates me every day!

What is your favorite food?
I absolutely love food! As far as cheat food goes I would say pizza or Greek food! When it comes to healthy food I love to bbq and make yummy fresh salads or veggie dishes! I always tell my clients that eating clean doesn’t have to be boring.. you just have to get creative!

What is your word for 2019?
Haha that is a tough one but I would have to say that my word of the year is initiative. Take the initiative every day and be in control of your own life.

What’s your go-to song or artist at the gym?
I grew up listening to it so I usually like to throw on some rap to get me pumped up in the gym! Old stuff like Biggie, NWA or (old) Eminem to new stuff like Kendrick and Schoolboy Q!

What are three interesting facts about you?
1. I’m not sure how interesting is it but I am a totallll animal lover. I have always felt very connected to all the animals I meet! If I wasn’t working in fitness I may very well be working with animals somehow!
2. A second interesting fact is that I started my first company at the age of 21 and have been working independently since then. My parents raised me to focus my career on being happy
3. The last is that I got my first job at a hotdog stand at the age of 14. I have always been motivated to hustle, it started at a very young age.

What is your greatest achievement and how has it shaped you?
I think opening my fitness studio probably has to be my greatest achievement! We went from a staff of 3 to a staff of 11 within the first 6 months and damn has it been an interesting and lesson-filled journey! I love my team, they’re my family! I wouldn’t change a thing!

If you could master one skill you do not have, what would it be?
Honestly, I can be pretty shy so a skill that I would love to master is just being able to talk in front of groups of people or to the camera without feeling completely stressed out about it! Lol!
