Start off by telling us about yourself and your journey so far!
My name is Des! I go by desb - I am an online health and fitness coach, and CEO of desBFITtraining LLC. I started as a D1 College Volleyball player and got into bodybuilding when my time as an athlete was over. From there I competed in my first NPC bikini competition. It was an amazing experience, and the hype around what I did got built. People started to ask ME for help, and that's when I created my business. I now sell multiple DBFTFitGuides, and coach women online, helping them transform into their best selves!
How did you get into fitness?
I was an athlete my whole life - I loved running track, basketball, volleyball, and everything I could do that was active. I loved bodybuilding because as a previous CrossFit competitor I was unable to continue due to the damage it had on my body. Bodybuilding changed my life, and I have never felt better about myself!
What's your fitness specialty?
My specialty is in bodybuilding/resistance training. I love to help women in every walk of life understand the importance and goodness of taking care of your body from the inside out. Helping those do what I wish I would've done earlier is the goal!
What's your preferred style of encouragement?
I LOVE to talk to people. I think yes, you can definitely encourage from a caption or written words - but the power of telling someone face to face, or voice to voice to "keep it up" or "you're doing great" is just so powerful! In the world we live in, we forget the importance of real and pure conversation, so I try to keep that alive.
What would you recommend to someone that is new to the city, or working out, in terms of meeting and connecting with others?
I would definitely suggest group fitness classes! As someone who just recently moved as well, it is hard for me to make friends in a gym setting. Everyone is there, you want to do your own thing, and typically it's not made for a social connection. However, in group fitness classes you can meet people. Think of it like a "bar setting" but for fitness!
How do you track fitness goals?
I track my fitness goals by writing them down in "My Fit Journal" (code: desb). I love to see the weight that I am using weekly to see if I am doing what I need to be doing in the gym. I try to stay away from focusing on a number or scale because that is just one way to measure progress. I love to focus on my weights and my progress photos.
What do you track for fitness goals?
I track the weight I am using, and with my Apple Watch *which I LOVE*, I keep track of my calories burned, and my daily activity expenditure. Including my daily steps - which I think is a very overlooked statistic
Who are your fitness icons/mentors/heroes/inspiration?
I absolutely love Lauren Findley - she is a huge inspiration to me, not only physically but mentally. She remains so humble and kind to all people, while also crushing her fitness goals. My other inspirations are Katy Hearn and Haydn Schneider - they are husband and wife and a complete DUO - they own multiple businesses, and remain humble, thankful, and gracious as well. It is rare to find people in the industry like these 3, they have been of huge inspiration to me in my entrepreneurial AND fitness journey.
What is your favorite food?
I LIVE for sushi and froyo - that is my go-to meal weekly at least once.
What’s your go-to song or artist at the gym?
I BOP to Ariana Grande, and anything electronic/upbeat. It keeps me on point for my heavy sets and getting the motivation to crush it. HOWEVER, I am a huge listener of podcasts during my lifts too!
What are three interesting facts about you?
1. I have a phobia with cotton balls!
2. I am getting married in September 2019.
3. I ALWAYS wanted to be an entrepreneur.
What is your greatest achievement and how has it shaped you?
My greatest achievement would have to be doing what I am doing right now - taking all the negative things that have happened to me in the past to now let it fuel me to run and create my own business. I quit my first job out of college to pursue my passion for my OWN business, and haven't looked back. I never plan to either! This has shaped me to be able to be a role model to many showing what PASSION and PERSEVERANCE can do for you. Anyone can make their dreams reality, but few keep at it.
If you could master one skill, you do not have, what would it be?
I would love to master boxing/MMA. I think that is such a fun and fascinating way of being physically fit, and I want to learn more about it. However, outside of fitness, I would love to master DJing, this is something I am passionate about because I LOVE music and I love the mental outlet it can take you to!
